451 - King of Love, O Christ, We Crown You

Tune: Hermon

The music for this was better in the old red hymnal -- it was more harmonically varied.  I used to really like this hymn, but am somewhat luke-warm about it these days.  There's sure a lot of kingafap in it, lots of Kinging and reigning and butch stuff like that (reigning from the tree, no less -- a poetic but somewhat obscure bit of text).  I just find the text a little bleak, with it's fearful concern that "the might of fierce temptation [might] snare us into deadly sin."  And then there's all the nailing to the cross ... well, it starts out good, but kind of goes downhill, IMHO.
