185 - Sing, My Tongue, the Glorious Battle

Tune: Oriel

For Pete's sake, why did the music committee of Common Praise give only this tune for such a famous text?  Pange lingua gloriosi is one of the oldest and greatest Christian hymns, and the prayer book specifically appoints it to be sung on Good Friday following the reproaches (BAS p.317)  But Oriel is such a plain, dull, uncreative tune.  I mean, if you can't sing plainchant, or for some reason don't want to learn how the words fit the chant melody, this is a reasonable second choice, but still .... dull is dull, there's no rescuing it.

Why not try singing the words to their real melody, the one Jesus sang it to, Pange Lingua #50.
